Photography is a hobby that turned into a second career in 2006, when I moved to Bethlehem, PA. I began exploring the area with my first DSLR in hand. I like to head out on foot or on my bike. I spend an afternoon walking in a small town or biking through the countryside noting where scenes of interest are, and then I return when the conditions are best.
The majority of my work is landscapes found in the Pennsylvania/New Jersey area. I’ve explored several different styles and am starting to find my niche. I have four primary lines of work: Animals with Attitude, Small Town Life, monotone Scenics and Dreamscapes.
My Animals with Attitude line is taken on various farms around the area. Either I meet a farmer at a show that likes my work, or I make cold calls. I’ll spend a lot of time just sitting in the pen with the animals waiting to capture the mood I am looking for, which is always something humorous. My Small Town Life photographs are exactly that. I try to capture the charm in the many small towns around the area.
Most of my straight scenic shots have a monotone quality to them. They are usually taken on foggy mornings with a strong yet simple subject in the foreground, which is enhanced by the fog in the background. All of these are color photographs of scenes with little color in them.
My Dreamscapse photographs are the only photographs that I digitally manipulate. I take a straight photograph and then apply a soft focus filter to the image and boost the saturation to create a dreamlike quality.
I’ve expanded my photography career to include photo journalism. I enjoy the challenge of capturing an image in a limited time with existing lighting conditions. I find it rewarding when I capture an action shot that really tells a story. It also provides the opportunity for me to interview my subjects and learn more about what is happening in the photographs.
I use a Canon EOS 50D digital camera. The photos are printed using an Epson 4800 printer with Epson’s archival inks and paper (and Epson Canvas). I also do all of my own matting and framing using Crescent or Bainbridge conservation quality mats. In my framed pieces I use pre-cut TruVue Conservation Clear glass with 97% UV protection.
