I took pictures for fun most of my life. It was a 2006 move to Bethlehem, when in my early 40’s I left 17 years of federal government service to be closer to my family, which provided the opportunity for photography to be my career focus.Landscape Photography allows me to spend more time outdoors, with my 4 legged best friend (a mutt named Brandy). The majority of my work is landscapes found in the Pennsylvania/New Jersey area. Both of these states have a wealth of beautiful and geographically diverse State and Local parks.
My photos encompass a mid size view of an area, with very little macro or panoramic work. I find myself drawn to rainy, foggy days. I try to use the fog in a way that simplifies the background in the scene, enhancing the visual impact of the foreground. Water of all forms entices me as a topic. Waterfalls are extremely powerful to stand near, yet by using a timed exposure they appear more enchanting than strong. And reflections in still water have a calming effect. There is peacefulness in my photographs of water in its various forms.
I produce photo note cards of over 200 images along with archival quality matted and framed pieces. I’ve recently begun creating my own frames that are unique to the photograph. I print photos on canvas, making my own frames for the canvas.
I’ve expanded my photography career to include photo journalism. I’m surprised how much I enjoy it. It has also greatly improved my photography skills, because you have a lot less time to “get the shot.” You need to evaluate the entire scene and lighting quickly.
All of my photographs are taken with a Canon EOS 30D digital camera. The photos are printed using an Epson 4800 printer with Epson’s archival inks and paper (and Epson Canvas). I also do all of my own matting and framing using Crescent or Bainbridge conservation quality mats. In my framed pieces I use pre-cut TruVue Conservation Clear glass with 97% UV protection.
